BEATING SEASONAL HURTLES
The gear you need to become more athletic: shoes, jackets, and attitude

Every January begins with a variety of fitness goals that are usually abandoned by February. Lack of determination, weak willpower, and general sluggishness tend to be the leading causes of unreached fitness goals, but there are also significant seasonal factors that are equally responsible for keeping us on our couches instead of out on the track. Simply put, the winter season is a difficult time to get into shape. Running through snow, sleet, and freezing rain can be a daunting task even for the most committed athletes, let alone those who are just embarking on a new path. However, if you’re serious about improving your health and body in the New Year, you’re going to need to find ways to overcome these seasonal hurtles.

Get Into Gear

With the right seasonal gear, sub-degree temperatures are no longer a valid excuse to neglect your fitness goals. Invest in a thermal, wind-resistant (but breathable) jacket and a pair of waterproof athletic shoes specifically designed for outdoor terrain. Remember that as you run, your body temperature will rise, so you don’t need to weigh yourself down with unnecessary layers; smart thermal designs are intended to keep your body warm and light, so the right jacket will make a huge difference.

The real power of athletic shoes and other winter fitness apparel are not only how they protect you from the chilly elements, but also how they help motivate you psychologically. If your athletic shoes are your favorite shoes, you’ll want to wear them more. Likewise, if these shoes are intended for outdoor exercise, suddenly exercise may become a more tempting prospect.  In general, the more you love your winter exercise gear, the more likely you will be to put it to use. Aside from their practical use, winter athletic gear is another way to make fitness more fun and prevent seasonal hibernation.

Shoes Where You Can See Them

Keeping your equipment visible is key to staying active. Rather than hiding your athletic shoes in the closet, keep them by the door or somewhere you are likely to spot them. This will remind you of your investment and your fitness goals. Visual reminders of your fitness resolutions are absolutely essential for staying on task. If your shoes are tucked under the beat or thrown into a closet, they’ll be out of sight and inevitably out of mind.

All About Attitude

When you’re sproting your athletic shoes, you should feel like you’re on the right path toward a fitter, healthier life. This feeling should become infectious, fueling your resolve everytime you lace yourself up. January is cold and gets colder the more you sit still. Turn up the heat, get in motion, and your old hurtles will soon melt away.
